Background for Our Amish Friends, the Rabers Family

Thus begins a whirlwind visit with our very good friends, the Rabers. They are of the Old Order Amish from Holmes County, Ohio. It devastated the family last January when my good friend Marlene, the wife and mother of six children, died suddenly of a brain tumor. After the six-month mourning period, Robert remarried a wonderful woman named Martha. She quickly became a wonderful mom to all six children! Because it was Marlene's dying wish to come and visit us in North Carolina, Robert quickly brought the family down in an RV with a driver by using the couples honeymoon present given to them by their community! How special to be thought of us this way! Marlene was definitely there in spirit! We began our visit by meeting them at Dixie Stampede in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. It was a wonderful show! It was wonderful food! It was wonderful company! There was even a horse named Annie! Once they got to our house, we had a couple of days of and absolutely frantic tour of the mountains! We had lunch, we had children naming different waterfalls, and they visited every single place we could think of that would excite them. This is a family who had never seen the mountains. The thing they desired most of all was to meet our community, so we invited all of her family and friends to come and meet the Rabers for themselves. It was quite a night! The entire visit is one that we will not soon forget!
