Leia's Middle School Field Trip to the Basillica & The Sculpture Garden

Today mom chaperoned on the exciting field trip to the Basilica of st. Lawrence in Asheville! Even though Leia was in a bit of pain from her braces, she still had a good time! Leia and her friends were very impressed by both the Mary chapel, and the Adoration Chapel, on either side of the altar. Mama was the most impressed with the fact that Gustavino, the architect of the famous ceiling that is the biggest free standing dome in North America, and also the architect of the ceiling in Grand Central Station, the Biltmore House, and Ellis Island, was buried right there behind a secret door! It actually made me gasp! We also learned about the candle and the red and yellow umbrella that symbolizes a basilica, and we learned of the coat of arms of Pope Francis which, in one of the pictures, is in the upper right hand corner. We all had a picnic lunch outside, and we were excited to learn that both Anne Marie and Sadie have as many spiritual experiences as we do! Then it was off to the Sculpture Garden, where we went searching on a mile hike for a famous sculpture called "Fiddleheads," which is a  larger than life depiction of baby ferns. :-)
