Another First Eucharist tradition is to make a special banner for the entrance procession. We were given a "banner kit," yes, but Leia Rose had her own ideas. First, she wanted rainbow letters (not the traditional white letters suggested in the kit). A short trip to Michael's solved that problem. She remembered a very specific picture of the bread and wine from her religion book at school (you can see it directly between the two pieces of white paper and felt above). Then came the huge project of transforming her idea to paper and finally to felt. As I was helping to glue one piece, I looked over and saw Leia cutting out little tiny pieces from a few colors. "Honey, what are you doing?" "Mamma, these are the jewels. I want the Blood of Christ to have jewels! ... and the host to have a peach cross." It was certainly a labor of love, and Leia did a wonderful job! She even had room to add a small cross on the side to complete her work! (And I have to admit, it was really nice to see her banner stand out as different among all of the others who used only the cut-out suggestions from the kit.)
Another tradition is for the children to make a First Communion banner. Here is the beautiful result unveiled at the First Communion Rehearsal!
